What is FLAG?

The Future Leaders in American Government is a three day and two night simulation of the United States Congress. Students are housed and fed on the campus which they select, and are invited to a range of activities during their stay. FLAG anticipates 150 to 200 students to attend each session respectively.

During committee sessions, delegates assume the role of a particular Congressman or Senator and are faced with a variety of issues that threaten the stability of the nation. As elected legislators, our delegates shoulder the weight of 4 responsibilities that define their role. These responsibilities, carefully balanced and navigated, underscore the depth of their commitment to the democratic process and are essential skills to understand for our nation’s future leaders.

1) Party dynamics: Delegates are tasked with embodying and advancing the principles of their chosen political affiliation. This requires astute negotiation skills, collaboration, and an acute understanding of their party’s stance on various issues.

2) Satisfying a constituency: Delegates are the voice of the people, entrusted with representing the diverse perspectives and concerns of their constituents. This responsibility necessitates a keen awareness of local and regional needs, ensuring that the voices of those they represent are not only heard but actively considered in the legislative process.

3) Passing actionable legislation: Delegates are charged with crafting policies that not only align with their party’s agenda but also address the pressing challenges outlined within their committee’s purview. This involves thorough research, robust debate, and a commitment to formulating viable solutions.

4) Effective responses to crisis situations: Delegates must navigate unforeseen challenges and swiftly adapt legislative strategies to mitigate, manage, and resolve crises that may emerge during the course of the conference.
